Dear Chief Ludemann:

The daily news reports of the range fires in Northwest Nebraska have captured the attention of citizens across our state. While it is a relief to know there has been no loss of human life, the fires have had a devastating impact on the livelihoods and stunning landscape of the Pine Ridge. The past several weeks have surely been exhausting for everyone involved in fighting these significant fires. We are humbled by the collective courage of all the volunteers who stepped forward to help protect the land and the communities in the Northwest region of our state.

We want to support the recovery effort and help all the participating departments re-establish their readiness 1 o respond to future emergencies. Our Trustees approved an outright grant of cash assistance for equipment repair or replacement, or for your department's general fund to meet future needs. A check in the amount of $7,500 is enclosed and made payable to the O'Neill Volunteer Fire Department.

During his lifetime, Mr. Kiewit was partial to Western Nebraska. As a rancher himself, he would understand the challenges of fighting massive range fires and he would be gratified to know that his estate was sending help in response to this crisis. While we feel pretty remote back here in Omaha, we hope this funding symbolizes a handshake, of sorts, across our great state. One thing all Nebraskans have in common is a rugged, can-do spirit and your volunteers have demonstrated it heroically. We send our heartfelt gratitude, thoughts and prayers to all of you.
